Welcome to Real Dog Academy!

Does your dog listen to you? Does your dog follow your lead, or does your dog just do whatever it wants? Does your dog pee in the house, drag you around during walks, charge through open doors, rudely jump on people, bark obsessively, or generally disobey you? Does your dog suffer from phobias, anxiety, aggression, depression, fearfulness, hyperactivity, or laziness? Do you have a new puppy in need of guidance or basic training? Fear not! Dog training is simply problem solving, and every problem has a solution.

If you are a dog owner, you are a dog trainer.

Every single interaction you have with your dog teaches it something, and every one of these interactions shapes and accumulates into your dog’s behavior. Every time you walk your dog, play with your dog, feed your dog, pet your dog, speak to your dog, or even simply look at your dog, your dog is learning based on how you are interacting with it and in relation to its immediate context. It is for this reason that, as dog owners, it is critical that we understand how our dogs learn so that we may have the best influence on them as possible by interacting with them in a deliberate and productive manner.

We are our dogs’ leaders.

Dogs, just like their wolf ancestors, are social pack animals. They look to us, as the ultimate alphas in their lives, to provide them with more than just food, shelter, and affection; they need structure and discipline. A dog needs a strong, confident leader, and an effective leader must understand those they lead. Step one to training a dog, or to troubleshooting dog behavior problems, is to develop an understanding of how a dog’s mind operates. Step two is to critically examine our own, often counterproductive, methods of interaction with our dogs. Only then can we work as a team to help our canine companions overcome their varied issues and bad habits so that we may live together in greater harmony.

Dog training is not a “one and done” type of thing.

When you train a dog, you are teaching it a package of skills, and just like when a human sets out to learn and master any particular skill, such as playing an instrument, it requires regular, usually daily practice. In order to effectively train your dog, you will need to become your dog’s trainer. Our services do not focus just on training for your dog, but also on training for you, the dog owner, so that you may continue your dog’s education on your own. After working together, Real Dog remains available to our customers for life time support for you and your dog.
